Much loves for y’all xoxo

I have been looking around for somewhere budget to eat and while scouring the web, Eighteen Chefs popped up recurringly. And I remember my sister going there to eat quite often with her friends, so I thought it will be a good time to try it out this time, especially when I can still leverage on my student card heh 🙂

For the price I paid for the student meal, I am really happy and satisfied with what I have! Ice Lemon Tea, Pasta, and Ice-cream all for less than 10 bucks! 😀

Cheese Baked Pasta with Red&White Sauce and Chicken Sausage @ Eighteen Chefs, The Cathay

I have to confess that the menu was a little mind-boggling for me initially, but the service staff was so patient and nice that she answered all of my many many questions which enlightened me very much! I am especially drawn to the mix-and-match concept for which I can choose from the many sauces so I am definitely going back to try them out! Didn’t dare to try Japanese curry with pasta this time round, but I am so gonna do it once! hahaha (Y)

I don’t know if it’s because I am getting older or what, but nowadays I tend to crave for hot desserts – especially this! Though this doesn’t taste as nice as how I remembered it to be :/

Going to scout for more budget food and nice nice hot dessert! (:

P.S. Really enjoyed myself meeting up with people who really count :3 Treasuring the company and treasuring the lifetime friendship (:

Hi-Tea Buffet @ Chilli Padi Nonya Café

Family buffets are the best because they are with the family! 😀

This is at Heng Mui Keng Terrace which is nestled within the NUS campus somewhere near Sheares Hall. The previous time we had it was at Bugis before it moved to the present location. The place here is larger and I was a little surprised to see so many people coming for the Hi-Tea buffet like us!

I was reading Neil Humphreys’ “Notes from an even Smaller Island” and one sentence stood out for me:

Eating out in Singapore is a social occasion…

I have to agree. Totally.

The remainder of the paragraph talks about how restaurants became the place for our social interactions in Singapore, giving rise to such a strong food culture in Singapore and among Singaporeans, whereas in England, it is more of a pub culture.

This is one big difference I felt when I was in exchange, and funnily enough, it took me quite a bit of time to nail down what that nagging difference is. So I guess this explains a little why I was missing home so much. Missing the affordability and accessibility of good food back at home, and definitely missing all the food and food meetups here.

But, just to clarify, this does not mean I don’t like Europe’s food! I do miss some of the food I have eaten in Europe (I’ll share if I’ve got the time haha), but it’s just that really, eating out in Europe is like a privileged indulgence, in my humble opinion.

Anyways, having such a strong food culture in Singapore just means that whenever I am meeting up with my friends for a day, I know I am in for food food food the entire day hahahah!

So here’s documenting what I had for my Saturday meetup (:

Here’s Lunch:

À La Carte Pork Mix Toji Set @ Yayoi, The Star Vista

Papillote – Smoked salmon folded over scrambled eggs on toast @ Hatched, Holland Village

And then here’s dinner! I quite like this, perhaps because of the combination of everything! Though I have got to admit it looks like a really simple dish that can be easily put together by anyone, and so it felt a little overpriced!

And finally there’s Dessert! I remember being very impressed by The Daily Scoop’s ice-cream – before I left for exchange, I had the Stracciatella cone all to myself and I was very happy and satisfied about it! But I guess Italy’s gelatos are too memorable with all the exciting flavours awnnns! And I can’t seem to find the Stracciatella flavour when I went back to The Daily Scoop this time round 😡

Dinner Buffet @ Irodori Japanese Restaurant, POMO

There is always this bunch of friends I have whom, somehow or rather, always end up having Japanese sashimi buffet with. It was an observation one of us just pointed out yesterday night, and I have to agree that is rather true. As much as our budget for eating out with friends has grown over the years, there are not many who would readily agree to fork out $40+ for a meetup-and-catchup session like this. I have mentally calculated that the amount of money I paid for the Jap dinner buffet yesterday night can actually pay for my one week’s worth of lunch.

But I am not going to complain because this is after all, a Japanese buffet. With free flow sashimi! And in my friend’s opinion, it is considered one of the more worth-it Japanese buffets here in Singapore. And I have to confess when I was in Europe, I actually miss eating Jap buffets so much that I wish I could just fly back to Singapore to have them. Out of curiosity and a little desperation, I tried one Jap buffet back in Maastricht but admittedly, I was not very impressed. It was considered decent by some people, but the fact that their Sashimi Moriwase is not included in the A la carte buffet selection (i.e. you have to pay extra and it is not even going to be free flow) left me feeling quite disappointed. So, not complaining (not that much at least haha).

Sashimi Moriwase is always the highlight! But I love their handroll and sushi as well! I was not very impressed by all their fried food though but they did satisfy my craving so who cares haha!

Anyways, I realise I always have the problem of striking the right balance and deciding when is the right time to stop in buffets. I have been to buffets where I literally feel like puking after I finished everything. After so many buffets, one lesson I learnt is to pace it well. This time round, I was glad to feel pleasantly full (though it is strange that I thought I could still eat somemore when I was sitting down, but when I stood up I finally felt full). I like this, and I am going to keep practising to get the right balance haha!

P.S. And just another observation: With this bunch of friends, we never ever need to get on to the usual stuffs I bring up to talk about, because we have this adventurous one among us who can share with us so many many exciting travel stories! Nice hahaha! (Y)

Of Iceland: The Spark

It actually started off with a friend asking me “What is nice there in Iceland?” after my trip to Iceland and I had no good reply except for the interesting and exotic food I had tried there that excited me so much.

That was when it came to my realisation that I remember places, even countries I travel to, by the food I had there.

Out of the one-week Carnival holidays we had in March this year, we spent 3 days in Iceland. In retrospect, it may seem to be quite a wasted trip because we bought the air tickets to Iceland at a crazily high price, with the intention to catch the Northern Lights, but ended up seeing nothing due to bad weather. I don’t know about my friend, but for me, I was glad to have gone to Iceland – no regrets.

On the first night when we touched down at Reykjavik, Iceland, we went to this Icelandic Fish and Chips restaurant my friend found online. I remember initially I was rather sceptical about eating fish and chips in Iceland because fish and chips don’t sound very Icelandic, do they? But being a fried food fan, I can never resist fish and chips! And it turned out to be one of the best and most gratifying fish and chips I have ever eaten! Crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside, the portion is really satisfying and it comes with Skyronnes with different cool flavours to choose from! I’ve read about Skyr being a local dairy product before I came to Iceland and guessing that Skyronnes are something related to Skyr, that really excited me and I was so eager to try it. (After that, I found out that Skyronnes are actually Icelandic dipping sauces that are made out of Skyr instead of mayonnaise, so though I didn’t try Skyr per se, I was still glad for the Skyronnes!)

Our fish and chips came with a Skyronnes dip for each, so we had two flavours! One was Coriander and Lime, and the other one was Truffle and Tarragon. And that was what I ordered – It had bits of roasted coconut underneath it which tasted so Asian and reminded me of home!

On the last night, we went to Saegreifinn (The Sea Baron) for the legendary lobster soup that was highly raved about on the web. I was so looking forward to it because online reviews talked about how you can get a rather local experience at the restaurant sitting on the barrels and eating fresh, good food.

And sure enough, it was a fairly simple and down-to-earth place which looked different from how the typical restaurants usually look like. I was pleased with the no-frills and though it was a little squeezy, it felt cosy.

The selection of seafood skewers to choose from!

That’s the raw whale! D:

Lobster soup was not bad but not exactly Wow in my opinion – guess I made too much hype out of it so I might have been expecting too much. As for the whale meat, it was really an experience for me. My friend told me the whale meat tasted like steak, perhaps because it was prepared to be medium-rare, so for someone who doesn’t take beef since young, I could not really get used to the taste of that. I was so glad I shared that with my friend, and the fish skewers and lobster soup saved me quite a bit as well.

The most memorable food I tried in Iceland had to be Hákarl (fermented shark cubes) and I felt so accomplished I managed to eat it haha – you just need to try it for yourself! 😀
